[Review] Love Like a Supernova: Forever, Interrupted by Taylor Jenkins Reid
"Have you ever heard of supernovas? They shine brighter than anything else in the sky and then fade out really quickly, a short burst of extraordinary energy. I like to think you and Ben were like that... in that short time, you had more passion than some people have in a lifetime."
After reading and loving The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & The Six, I had to read at least one of TJR's other books. Most of them are a lot more chick-lit than the two I read before but I felt like I would actually enjoy them. I was definitely right with this one.
"Forever, Interrupted" tells us the story of Elsie who after a short whirlwind romance gets married and looses her husband soon after that in an accident. This leads to her finally meeting his mother whom she never met before and who didn't know about Elsie.
This is a cute and simple love story on one hand and a cute and comforting story about grief and healing on the other. Both parts of the story are contrasted through interchanging chapters that play in the present and in the past.
It's a very typical cliché white m/f romance to some degree but it's cute nonetheless and works well. The healing story on the other hand is seriously the better part and the reason I decided to read this story. Elsie and her mother-in-law getting to know each other while grieving the loss of someone they loved is written in a nice way that makes you feel for the characters and understand them. Grief is always a difficult topic to deal with and I feel like TJR did a good job to let us see how both characters deal - and don't deal - with it.
The writing isn't the most amazing but for a chick-lit novel completely fine. Also, as this was TJR's first novel, it's interesting to see how she developed as a writer as I've so far only read her newest works. You can feel that she changed but the sensibility she has in telling stories and showing slightly more difficult topics is already there.
I think this book would work well for people who usually read YA but want to read an adult novel. It's simple but effective with easy writing but some adult topics. Also, I basically recommend this to any mom out there because if I go by mine, most would probably love this. Especially if they love Pilcher and such. It's nothing like that but I still feel like this might be a good choice for them anyway.
